About Bayou Portage Wildlife Management Area

Bayou Portage Wildlife Management Area is located in Natchitoches Parish in northwestern Louisiana and managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The area encompasses diverse bottomland hardwood forests, swamp habitats, bayous, and oxbow lakes characteristic of the Red River Basin. Rich in biodiversity, Bayou Portage supports populations of whitetail deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and various fish species, attracting hunters, anglers, and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Historically, this area has been shaped by seasonal flooding and sediment deposition, creating productive habitats of cypress-tupelo swamps interspersed with mixed hardwoods. Recreationally, Bayou Portage is popular for duck and deer hunting during appropriate seasons, as well as fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish in its creeks and bayous. Visitors enjoy birdwatching opportunities with resident and migratory species including wood ducks, herons, and migratory songbirds. Though there are no developed campgrounds or visitor centers onsite, dispersed camping and boat launch sites support extended outdoor stays. The area’s quiet waterways invite canoeing and kayaking, while trails and forest roads allow exploration on foot or ATV. Overall, Bayou Portage Wildlife Management Area provides a natural, relatively undisturbed landscape where outdoor recreation is combined with careful wildlife management and habitat conservation.
